Well Woman Exam Q & A

What is a well-woman exam?

Well-woman exams are a fundamental part of your preventive health plan. Also called an annual or gynecological exam, these visits focus on your body and reproductive health.

Even if you feel healthy, yearly well-woman exams are important. These visits allow Dr. Niznikiewicz to screen for common health problems, including cancer and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Well-woman visits also give you a chance to ask Dr. Niznikiewicz about any unusual symptoms you have, like irregular periods or pelvic pain. He also advises you on women’s health issues, including birth control, fertility, and menopause.

Who needs well-woman exams?

All people with female reproductive organs should get well-woman exams. Dr. Niznikiewicz cares for patients from age 16 through their post-menopausal golden years.

It’s standard to get a well-woman exam once a year. Dr. Niznikiewicz may ask you to come back for a follow-up visit if you need additional services, like a colposcopy.

What does a well-woman exam involve?

What happens during your well-woman exam varies depending on your specific age, medical history, and risk factors for disease. Women in their late teens and early 20s may get immunizations, like the HPV vaccine.

Women 21 and older get pelvic exams and breast exams. During a pelvic exam, you lie on your back with your feet elevated in footrests. Dr. Niznikiewicz inserts a speculum into your vagina and gently spreads your vaginal walls to view your cervix.

He may also take a Pap test at this time. A Pap test involves swabbing the surface of your cervix to collect cells for lab testing. Pap tests detect abnormal changes in your cervical cells that may develop into cancer.

As you get older, Dr. Niznikiewicz may recommend additional tests, like mammograms or bone density scans.

Regardless of your age, all well-woman visits involve a physical exam and review of your medical history. Dr. Niznikiewicz asks you questions about your health and lifestyle habits, like how often you exercise and whether you smoke. Then, he makes personalized recommendations on steps you can take to live your healthiest life.
