Obstetrics Q & A

What is an obstetrician?

The term OB/GYN is short for obstetrician-gynecologist. While the field of gynecology focuses on women’s reproductive health, obstetrics is the area of medicine dedicated to pregnancy and childbirth.

As a board-certified OB/GYN, Dr. Niznikiewicz provides medical care during the first three months (first trimester) of your pregnancy. During this time, he provides you with information on how to have a healthy pregnancy and answers any questions you may have about choosing a team of providers to support you through labor and childbirth.

When should I see an obstetrician?

You should schedule an appointment with Dr. Niznikiewicz as soon as you find out you’re pregnant. He provides both experienced and first-time mothers with early pregnancy care and obstetrics exams. Even if you’re just thinking about getting pregnant, Dr. Niznikiewicz helps you prepare your body by making healthy choices.

What does early pregnancy care involve?

Also called prenatal care, early pregnancy care plays a critical role in keeping you and your baby healthy throughout this special experience. Maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle and seeing Dr. Niznikiewicz for routine obstetrics exams are the fundamental factors of early pregnancy care.

What should I expect during my first prenatal visit?

Your first prenatal appointment will probably take more time than the other visits to follow. During your first visit,  Dr. Niznikiewicz thoroughly reviews your medical history, including any prior diseases, hospitalizations, and pregnancies.

You can also expect him to perform the following:

  • A review of your family’s medical history
  • A complete physical exam
  • A pelvic exam and Pap test
  • Blood and urine tests
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing
  • A check of your height, weight, and blood pressure

He calculates your due date and spends as much time as you need answering any questions you may have. He advises you on steps you can take at home to ensure the healthiest pregnancy possible, including:

  • Taking a prenatal vitamin that contains folic acid
  • Avoiding drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes
  • Eating a nutritious diet
  • Getting regular exercise

Dr. Niznikiewicz also makes sure you’re up to date on vaccinations. He performs in-office vaccinations, including the flu shot.
